چکیده

Congenital scoliosis is a scoliosis that occurs as a result of bony abnormalities that arise between 4 to 16 weeks of gestation. There are genetic and environmental factors involved in etio logy. The majority of congenital vertebral anomalies are in the thoracic spine (64%). The patients often have associated skeletal anomalies and can also be part of a syndrome. Skeletal, cardiac, genitourinary intraspinal abnormalities are most commonly found in associa tion with congenital scoliosis. The natural history seems to be related to the morphology of the bony the site in the spine, and the patient’s age. Congenital scoliosis usually progresses and often requires intervention. The aim of intervention is to achieve a flexible and balanced spine with normal truncal height and space available for lung ratio. Early intervention for scoliosis seems to be instrumental in trying to achieve these goals.

Etiology of Congenital Scoliosis

Congenital scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, resulting from disruption of normal vertebral development. Although there are many types of defects observed in congenital scoliosis, all result from abnormal formation and segmentation of the vertebral precursors, called somites. Developmental studies in animal models have identified many genes regulating somite formation and ...

Congenital scoliosis in monozygotic twins: case report and review of possible factors contributing to its development

BACKGROUND The exact etiology of congenital scoliosis remains unknown as yet. It seems that its development may be influenced by both genetic predisposition and environmental factors, at varying degrees. International bibliography features few cases of monozygotic twins with congenital scoliosis. The aim of this study is to report a case in monozygotic twins and review the literature relating t...

Complex congenital scoliosis: brace treatment. What can we expect?

Background Complex Congenital Scoliosis (CCS) is the most frequent cause of non-idiopathic Scoliosis. CCS is a frequent condition in Algeria, and is associated with severe spinal deformities due to failures of formation and segmentation. To date, there is no single treatment that can correct all the deformities in CCS, and the value of Brace Treatment (BT) is still debated. We report our experi...

Congenital scoliosis in a neonate: can a neonatologist ignore it?

The frequency of diagnosis of congenital scoliosis in the neonatal period is expected to rise given the increasing survival of high risk neonates in the surfactant era and their frequent exposure to x rays. Considering its significant long term implications a neonatologist cannot afford to ignore the diagnosis of congenital scoliosis in a neonate as close surveillance, early detection, and trea...

Congenital scoliosis in non-identical twins: case reports and literature review.

Congenital scoliosis due to vertebral anomalies may occur in less than 0.1% of the population. Several different theories have been put forth in the literature to account for the etiology of congenital scoliosis and the vertebral anomalies which contribute to its development. The study of scoliosis in twins has contributed to the understanding of causative factors including genetics, environmen...
